Mission Statement

The Mission of the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area (SMMNRA) is to protect and enhance, on a sustainable basis, one of the world’s largest last remaining examples of a Mediterranean ecosystem and to maintain the area’s unique natural, cultural and scenic resources, unimpaired for future generations. The SMMNRA is to provide an inter-linking system of parklands and open spaces that offer compatible recreation and education opportunities that are accessible to a diverse public. This is accomplished by an innovative federal, state, local, and private partnership that enhances the region’s quality of life and provides a model for other parks challenged by urbanization.

Description

Hidden in plain sight from Los Angeles, the Santa Monica Mountains offer easy access to surprisingly wild places. Experience the famous beaches of Malibu or explore more than 500 miles of trails. The park abounds with historical and cultural sites, from old movie ranches to Native American centers.

This park is also unique in that we jointly manage many locations with partners, like California State Parks and the Mountains, Recreation and Conservation Authority. It takes a village to protect a place like the Santa Monica Mountains, and even though we sometimes have different rules and regulations, we’re all eager to share these special places with the public.
