Mission Statement

A sustainable community means to work together within our community to create an attractive, clean area in which to live, and to protect the natural resources upon which all life is dependent - for example using energy and water more efficiently, managing our waste through recycling and composting, producing less waste, and reducing pollution. Charlottesville citizens live in a community with a vibrant urban forest, tree-lined streets, and lush green neighborhoods. We have an extensive natural trail system, along with healthy rivers and streams. We have clean air and water, we emphasize recycling and reuse, and we minimize stormwater runoff. Our homes and buildings are sustainably designed and energy efficient.

Description

At this years City Farmers Market in Charlottesville, Black Bear Composting will be leading this year's compost drop-off program at the Charlottesville City Market! As with the past two years, citizens are welcome to bring a variety of compostable materials during the market, which Black Bear will transport for making into soil! Volunteers will be educated by the project staff on the proper disposal of packaging found at the market as well as the environmental importance of diverting waste from landfills and the general science behind commercial composting versus backyard composting operations. With this knowledge, the volunteers will be able provide an important educational aspect to the program and work to empower market goers to make greener choices at the market and in their everyday lives.
