The Mission of the Space Center is to educate the people of New Mexico and our visitors from around the World in the history, science, and technology of Space and to honor the efforts of those who have advanced our understanding of the Universe. The Space Center collects, researches, and preserves objects and documents related to this Mission and presents public interpretive programs including exhibits, publications, and alternative learning experiences to inspire the imagination and promote tourism in the State.
The Space Center, in Alamogordo, New Mexico, is a Division of the Office of Cultural Affairs. It opened in 1976 as The International Space Hall of Fame and has grown to include an IMAX Theater and Planetarium, the John P. Stapp Air and Space Park, the Astronaut Memorial Garden, and the Hubbard Space Science Education Building. The museum is a five-story building which cronicles the history of mans' exploration of space and houses artifacs from around the world.
