ASPIRA of Illinois was founded in 1968 as a responce from Chicago's Puerto Rican community to the impact that the 1960's Chicago riots were having on the the community's youth scholastic performance, truancy, gang related violence and teen pregnancy rates. Thirty one years later we continue to empower Latino and other underprivileged youth through the encouragement of educational, cultural awareness and community involvement activities and services. We focus in after-school activities that provides a safe environment for youth to assess and analize community issues, adquire a sence of responsibility in the revitalizing process of the community through the continuation of high school and college education; and the active participation in community improvement endeavors.
