Mission Statement

The mission of the Michigan City Public Library is to provide a center for information, education, culture and recreation for all patrons throughout their life span, through its collections, programs and special services.

Description

The Learning Center at the Michigan City Public Libary provides free tutoring in the areas of reading and math for students in grades 1-12. Additionally we tutor adults who are working towards the High School Equivalency (HSE) exam, learning English as a Second Language (ESL), and citizenship.

Tutors are matched with students and typically meet twice a week for an hour at a time. Training is provided and ongoing in the areas of literacy/reading and English language skills. All materials are provided to the tutor; we only ask for your time and dedication!

While tutoring can take place anytime that the library is open, all tutoring between matched tutors and students is to take place on the premises of the library, and background checks, provided free of charge, are necessary prior to tutoring.

The MCPL tutoring program is a great experience. Students range from elementary school all the way to senior adults. All the materials are prepared for you, so you don't have to do a lot of work -- just come in with a positive attitude. A lot of support is given as you learn how to better your tutoring and find what works for your student. Great for those interested in working in education, for experienced educators, or ANYBODY interested in helping others with literacy, math, or language.
