Mission Statement

SEEDS encourages respect for life, for earth and for each other. We help individuals, neighborhoods and communities grow together through gardening, gathering and education.

Description

SEEDS is a non-profit community garden in Durham, North Carolina whose goal is to teach people to care for the earth, themselves, and each other through a variety of garden-based programs. Our primary focus is to give Durham's children and teens the opportunity to learn the value of growing and eating fresh produce and the connection between the health of the individual, the community and the earth. Out of an abandoned industrial site in one of Durham's urban neighborhoods, a 2-acre garden was created to demonstrate how community gardening can promote personal and community renewal. The Southside Garden offers an array of greenery, wildlife habitat, garden plots, artwork, and educational exhibits. Across the street, the Market Garden boasts a wide variety of vegetables, fruits, herbs, and flowers grown by teenagers and sold at the Durham Farmer's Market.
