Mission Statement
The mission of the "I Have a Dream" Foundation- East Oakland is to motivate and empower every "Dreamer" (a child "adopted" from a low-income community) to reach their educational/career goals by graduating from high school functionally literate and prepared for further education or fulfilling employment. To this end we will provide a long-term (11+ years) program of mentoring, tutoring, academic advising, enrichment activities, and tuition assistance for higher education.
Description
"I Have A Dream" Foundation - East Oakland will "adopt" a cohort of 53, second and third grade children from two neighboring housing complexes in East Oakland: The Lions Creek Crossing and Lockwood Gardens projects. We will follow these same children, called "Dreamers", for the next 11 years providing them with mentoring, tutoring, academic advising and social/cultural enrichment activities. Once they graduate from high school and are accepted into a certified academic or vocational program Dreamers are guaranteed a "Dreamer Scholarship" to help pay for educational costs.
