The Volunteer English Program (VEP) enhances the economic and social quality of life for immigrant families, community members, consumers, employers and employees in Chester County by providing tutoring for adults to improve their English language skills, their American cultural and civics understanding, and workplace communication skills.
Free of charge, the program provides one-on-one English language and culture tutoring to meet the urgent and specific needs of adult immigrants and refugees in Chester County. Tutoring sessions are held at local libraries, churches, or other mutually convenient locations in twice weekly, one-and-a-half-hour sessions for a period of one year. After attending nine hours of training, volunteers are matched with students from the waiting list. Before being placed on the waiting list, students are tested to determine an appropriate course of study. Books and materials are provided to address the individual student's unique language learning needs. Ongoing contact is maintained with the student/tutor pair to identify difficulties and monitor progress to insure quality of instruction.
