Mission Statement

The Kauai Food Bank believes that NO ONE on Kauai or Niihau should go hungry. We gather food from the community, local grocers, our farm and from off-island sources. We distribute this food to over 100 charitable agencies who then then feed their clients in need. Our programs include food service, a 3 acre working farm, vocational rehabilitation programs, and the Hui Mea'ai (a project that trains individuals to grow their own food and then sells their Grade A surplus for cash!

Description

The Kauai Food Bank is a 501 (c) (3) non-profit corporation established one month after Hurricane Iniki in the fall of 1992. We originally fed 80% of Kauai's population after the Hurricane, and continue to serve about 10% of the total population each month. The Kauai Food Bank has won numerous awards for innovation and creativity, from the USDA SEcretary of Agriculture, Dan Glickman, and the the WEinberg Foundation AIM for Excellence Award. The Food Bank does more than feed an emergency meal or two to the community, but teaches people how to grow their own food (at our 3 acre farm site) for themselves and for profit. The Hui Mea'ai is the project that buys Grade A locally grown produce and then sells it to major resort hotels (Marriott, Hyatt, and the Sheraton, and local grocers). In 1996, Hawaii Business Magazine reported that Food Banks were the most cost-effective charity in the State. The Kauai Food Bank is a member of the Aloha United Way of Kauai.
