"To provide quality child care and child development services to those working parents in greatest need while offering family services in which children are nurtured and educated, and their parent(s) assisted in meeting parental obligations."
Saint Vincent's Day Home is a private, non-profit, non-sectarian agency that provides a high quality children's program to families with great economic need in the heart of the West Oakland community. Since first opening its doors in 1911, the Day Home has welcomed over 32,000 children. Our long history of providing quality care to children and families in need has made us one of the most respected child development centers in the country. Our unwillingness to leave our original site in economically challenged West Oakland has established us as a symbol of stability in a community wrought with uncertainty. The Home has been a beacon of hope for families as they struggled through the Depression, two world wars, natural disasters and the continuing struggle to be free of economic depravation, and violence. It is undisputed that good childcare is important for all children; at Saint Vincent's we've held strong to the belief for the last 96 years that it's absolutely critical for poor children. Research confirms that high quality childcare can help compensate for the variety of ills children suffer when they grow up in poverty. Unfortunately, low-income children are the least likely to receive quality care. In an attempt to balance these odds, Saint Vincent's has been a long-standing advocate of children and families in need. Over the past 96 years, Saint Vincent's has remained true to our original purpose - to serve the poorest of the poor. Saint Vincent's primarily serves single parent families. Our children attend the Day Home while their parents work and/or attend accredited schools or skills training programs. The Day Home works with parents to assure that their children benefit from care, which meets their essential health, safety and developmental needs.
