Mission Statement

Our mission is to enhance the cultural life of Southern California by cultivating and promoting the art of choral singing throughout our communities. SACRA/PROFANA is committed to awakening and nurturing enthusiasm for the choral art, through vibrant performances and focused outreach. While adhering to the highest artistic standards, we recognize the need for programming that is both accessible and compelling, and offers a rewarding, entertaining experience for concertgoers of all backgrounds.

Description

SACRA/PROFANA continues to be the most innovative choral organization in the county, presenting the broadest range of choral music in new and unconventional venues. We have given world and local premieres of a large body of music and collaborate with many of this region's premiere arts organizations (SD Symphony, California Ballet, Martin Luther King Jr. Community Choir, Malashock Dance, Art of Elan, SD Children’s Choir, SD Opera). Our 2016-17 Season includes a cooperative project with Stephen Feigenbaum who has achieved international acclaim (Rolling Stone, LA Times). With season 9 our artistic plan is to bring the community together through the universal act of singing. The title is Building Bridges and it crosses a broad range of themes, cultures and generations.

SACRA/PROFANA provides arts, culture and creative experiences through its education programs as well. Our Summer Choral Intensive attracts choral students from across the county with participants from over 20 different schools in 2016. SCI always features a premier work in its final concert. In 2015 this work was commissioned from Charles West, a noted UK composer. He continues to share recordings of the performance at SCI. In addition to SCI, our Assoc. Artistic Director and members of our Core Chorus conduct nearly a dozen clinics and workshops in schools each year across multiple school districts including Sweetwater Union High, SD Unified and Chula Vista Elementary. We also provide teaching resources for after school choirs at Gompers Preparatory Academy and A Reason to Survive.
