Mission Statement

Mission Statement: REACH Together's mission is to improve the lives of Minnesota's newest refugees through: (1) education (English as a Second Language - ESL, citizenship and digital literacy classes) (2) assistance (cultural and language interpretation for family/survival needs; transportation to food/household goods distributions) and (3) collaboration (providing materials and space to practice traditional cultural arts; surveying refugee community to understand needs/concerns).

Description

Description : Located in the Dayton's Bluff neighborhood of St. Paul, MN, assistance is provided to anyone who walks in, although it primarily serves the ethnic Karen refugee families living within walking distance from its location.

The primary and critical services provided are:

(1) Adult ESL Literacy : Morning and afternoon ESL classes, Monday through Friday. Teachers have Masters degrees and/or teaching licenses.

(2) Citizenship Classes : Held twice a week to prepare individuals for the U.S. Citizenship Tests and Interview.

(3) Walk-in Interpreter/Paperwork Assistance : One of the biggest challenges for refugee newcomers is reading their mail. Some is junk mail, but often the envelopes contain notices of benefits being terminated or utility bills showing exorbitant amounts due. Misunderstanding of cultural norms (such as hunting for game in the neighborhood) result in citations, which require education and resolution.
