Mission Statement

Mission Statement:The Council shall promote literacy in Anne Arundel County by providing free, individualized reading and writing instruction to adults. It shall also support family literacy efforts and promote interest and involvement by the citizens of the community in its activities.

Description

Founded in 1977, the Council is a private, non-profit organization and serves as the local volunteer affiliate of Laubach Literacy Action and is also a member of the Literacy Works Team. Our primary focus is to recruit and train volunteers to provide one-on-one tutoring in reading & writing to adults using the Laubach method. Students at a 0 - 5th grade reading level are given a free, detailed assessment prior to placement. The Council provides pre-GED, ESL, detention center and family literacy programs, and also assists other organizations in setting up tutoring programs.
