Mission Statement

Free to Run’s mission is to use running, physical fitness and outdoor adventure to empower and educate women and girls who have been affected by conflict. We support those living within conflict areas as well as those who have been forced to flee and live as refugees outside of their home countries. Free to Run operates on the basic principle that sport is a human right and not a luxury. Sports can act as a driver of peace, a tool of empowerment and an avenue towards gender equality.

Description

Free to Run focuses specifically on supporting women and girls from regions of conflict because we believe they’re in greatest need, and hold the most potential for positive change in their communities. We have two models of programs. Our Country Programs focus on individuals and communities in conflict areas and our Refugee Programs provide support to those who have been forced to flee their homes. We provide regular sports activities including running, hiking and outdoor adventure. Sport activities can also be used as a platform to provide important life skills education. Through sports, women and girls have the opportunity to convene around a common interest, build their social networks, and develop their independence and public participation outside of the home. We strongly believe in the power of sports to transform the lives of women and girls, and we're deeply committed to making that happen. Free to Run Inc. is incorporated under Section 402 of the New York Not-for-Profit Corporation Law and established as a s501(c)(3) organization under United States federal law.
