Mission Statement

MISSION: To improve the quality of life of individuals and their families affected by mental illness through education, support and advocacy. VISION: That persons with mental illness can recover and lead productive and meaningful lives within their community of choice.

Description

Located in Tallahassee, NAMI Florida is the state chapter of the National Alliance on Mental Illness. We have thirty affiliates in communities throughout Florida that provide education, advocacy, and support groups for people living with mental illness and their loved ones. Each affiliate includes family members, friends, professionals, and consumers/peers whose lives have been impacted by mental illness. Affiliates also help members to access psychiatric services, treatment, benefits, medication, and housing.

NAMI Florida began as the Advocates for the Mentally Ill in 1984. Three years later, the organization was incorporated under Florida Alliance for the Mentally Ill and received its IRS non-profit tax status in 1989. In 1998 the corporation's name was changed to NAMI Florida, Inc. NAMI Florida, Inc. includes four divisions which reflect NAMI's mission: Education & Training, Information & Referral Services, Consumer Outreach, and Advocacy & Public Awareness.

Our mission is to promote recovery, reduce stigma, and improve health care and treatment for those living with a mental illness and their families. We work with state and federal agencies and our elected officials on a regular basis to assure that laws and regulations do no harm and work to improve lives. NAMI Florida also has an excellent relationship with many state health care organizations and provider groups, working collaboratively to achieve a better mental health system for all Florida's citizens.
