Mission Statement

Mission:

To promote a high standard of dance and movement through the education of children and the public.

Vision: Develop programs rooted in dance for under-served children; to nurture essential traits for achievements in life.

Description

Prairie Dance Theatre was founded by Beth Shumway in 1978. From 1978 until 2002, Prairie Dance Theatre offered concerts, children's shows, workshops and residency work in Oklahoma and the surrounding ten-state region as a professional touring dance company.

In the fall of 2003, we changed gears and decided to pursue dance education. We introduced The Prairie Dance Experience, a workshop designed for children ages seven through twelve in the Oklahoma City Public Schools.

Prairie Dance Theatre (PDT) is a 501(c)(3), local service organization that is a Member of Allied Arts.

PDT has been hard at work in the low-income elementary schools of Northeast Oklahoma City for the last six years, developing five dance-based performing arts programs for children ages 7 to 13. The programs are offered free of charge and serve 138 children annually.

PDT has made an impact on the children we serve by increasing confidence, developing social skills, offering a sense of accomplishment and encouraging our students to reach beyond their situation.

So many children do not have the opportunities we offer! It is our goal to grow our program and our effectiveness in the Oklahoma City area.
