Mission Statement

ABCD's mission is to empower disadvantaged people by providing them with the tools to overcome poverty, live with dignity, and achieve their full potential.

To fulfill this mission, ABCD uses a comprehensive approach that systematically addresses the range of barriers faced by households in poverty - from day-to-day crises to long-term needs for jobs and education.

Description

Since it's founding in 1961, ABCD has strived to be the voice and catalyst of empowerment and opportunity, providing hands-on assistance to those in need and responding promptly to emerging issues. Today, our capacity to bring about positive change impacts more than 85,000 low-income Boston-area families every year. ABCD seeks to be constantly innovative and entrepreneurial, while developing new programs to meet changing needs.

Through our network of neighborhood centers and hundreds of programs throughout the city, ABCD has the capability to serve diverse populations at every stage of their lives. To accomplish this goal, ABCD has developed a broad spectrum of programs to reach out to people in need and equip them with the skills and self-confidence they need to move forward in their lives.

ABCD also empowers this often invisible and ignored underclass of poor Americans by giving them a voice in the local, state and national landscape, a voice that helps shape public policy around the issues that have the greatest impact on their lives. This is the most direct way to translate human need into programs that provide opportunities for low-income Americans. It not only improves their quality of life, it improves the communities in which they live.

ABCD - with its unwavering mission of "overcoming poverty" - is a tireless advocate and significant program provider, working with commitment and creativity to promote self-help for low-income people and neighborhoods. It carries out this mission through a decentralized, neighborhood-based structure and a process that provides innovative, practical, and timely programs that emphasize education and skilled job-training at all levels and develop problem-solving skills for people and neighborhoods.

ABCD provides opportunities for more than 87,000 individuals and families each year to improve their lives and contribute to their communities. Thus ABCD programs offer a significant return on investment for our city, state and nation; it is the largest, independent, private 501 (c) non-profit human services agency in New England. Neighborhood residents from all over the city make up the majority of ABCD’s 48 board members.
