Description

Students Sharing Coalition is a non-profit organization dedicated to social justice. We work with middle and high school students across Balitmore on Community Action Projects such as rebuilding low income housing, working at soup kitchens, and tutoring and mentoring children. College students also play an important role as they are trained as our youth facilitators and can mentor younger people through our programs. We are facilitating a civic engagement curriculum in the urban middle schools, Operation AWARE that involves hundreds of young people each year in a strategic look at their communities. The 14-week curriculum is co-facililated by one of our trained AmeriCorps/VISTA's and a classroom teacher. Students learn about civic vs personal responsibility, research and write about social issues affecting them, take part in an out-of-school community asset mapping and design service learning projects. After this program students are eligible to join after-school Justice Circles that reinforce what they have learned and focus on community organizing projects that they can create. This is a great way to make a difference in your community and earn community service-learning hours for graduation. Middle school students can also apply to involved in our Summer Service Action Camp, a two week camp of service, leadership and fun.
