AFS-USA Opportunities to Volunteer, Host, Donate, Study Abroad and More for 2023-24 The Miss Tennky Area AFS Volunteer Leadership Team (www.afsusa.org/misstennky/) offers many opportunities to be involved as we host and send students though out the word. AFS-USA has been doing this since 1947 very successfully. Currently, the team does not know which school systems will accept AFSers this fall. If you know that your system will, please, let us know. Student mini-bios that are scheduled to need loving hosts in the fall may be seen at www.afsusa.org/host. You will be amazed at their multiplicity of interests and talents .(We do know that to host in MNPS, applications must be vetted by June 1st.) AFS-USA Intercultural Programs is a leading international exchange program in the world. It has been successfully hosting and sending students and teachers on exchanges since 1947 to over ninety (90) partner countries. The founding of AFS (The American Field Service), the ambulance drivers in WW I and WW II, was over 100 years ago. AFS international students are spread throughout TN, MS, KY and Alabama. Many school systems will not be accepting students this fall, but may in Spring. Check with your school system befeore applying to hosts. More host families for the future and volunteers to support those who are here now are needed by the Miss Tennky Area AFS Volunteer Leadership Team for the next school year. Many varied volunteer positions are available. The time you spend will depend on the time you have and wish to give. These are some examples: cluster chair, area chair, liaisons, interviewers, orientation organizers and workers, festival workers, school visitors, plus lunch and activity booth workers, treasurer, newsletter chair and writers, public speakers for community clubs and churches, public relations, sending chair and etc. There is online training for many of these positions. Contact Becky Heywood, volunteer coordinator and area chair at 615-473-4389 and AFSbecky@comcast.net, to discover which volunteer jobs would be perfect for you on the Miss Tennky Area AFS Team. One can register online at www.afsusa.org/volunteer-with-afs and look at the team website at http/afsusa.org/misstennky/ Christina.pettinelli@afsusa.org serves as the sending coordinator for students who wish to go as foreign exchange students to one of AFS-USA's 90 partner countries. There are summer, semester, year long and gap year program. They may be viewed at www.afsusa.org/stiudy-abroad. Many different types of scholarships are available and vary from year to year. Deadlines begin January 9th with Congress-Bundestag and FLEX. Other dates vary. Contact ksullivan@afsusa.org if you are interested in hosting an AFSer. She is the Miss Tennky Area AFS Volunteer Leadership Support Team Development Specialist. The web site is www.afsusa.org/host where you may put in your zip code to see the mini-bios who will need a family for 2021-22. Some school syst. ems will accept students at semester, but not CMCSS. MNPS will accept second semester students. This fall CMCSS will not be accepting students in the fall. MNPS and Williamson County will accept AFSer in the fall. Students who are in need of hosting come with spending money, a wealth of interests and talents and are fully medically insured. You furnish the loving home, transportation and food. Looking for a new sending coordinator to serve as the sending coordinator for students who wish to go as foreign exchange students to one of AFS-USA's 40 partner countries. This year is the 111th Anniversary of the American Field Service. The members were the ambulance drivers in WWI and WWII. Members of this group formed AFS as it is today. Two were actually from Tennessee. The Miss Tennky Area AFS Leadership Team plans to place forty+ foreign exchange students in the area for the 2023-24 school year. Volunteer families are most needed in the late summer for hosting AFSers that will arrive in August for the school year. and folks to servie as liaisons and uncles/aunts, plus welcome families throughout the year.
