Mission Statement

The mission of NAMI Rhode Island is to educate the public about mental illness; to offer resources and support to all whose lives are touched by mental illness; to advocate at every level to ensure the rights and dignity of those with mental illness; and to promote research in the science and treatment of mental illness.

Description

We assist local affiliates to provide information and support for many Rhode Island families living with mental illness.

We present education programs, including the NAMI Family-to-Family Education course for families; Peer-to-Peer Education course for consumers living with a serious mental illness; Inside Mental Illness and our Speakers' Bureau where individuals with serious mental illness share their stories with high school students, college students and the general public; and we conduct trainings for mental health professionals.

We also offer lectures, workshops and a yearly conference. We advocate with policy makers and legislators on behalf of people with mental illness.

We promote expanded research into mental illness and spread the word when new developments occur. We monitor state and local mental health facilities and agencies to ensure quality care and promote good relations between families and professionals.

NAMI-Rhode Island's office in Providence is a resource center for all concerned with improving the lives of people with mental illness. Many tapes, books, brochures and other materials are available to members and others seeking information. Callers to the NAMI-RI office can also receive information on mental illness and available services over the telephone, via fax or by e-mail from staff and trained volunteers.
