Target Hunger’s mission to alleviate hunger and its root causes in the heart of Houston’s inner city has provided over 5.5 million pounds of food in 2013 to families, children, and seniors. That translates to 4,583,000 meals to otherwise hungry Houstonians. Our agency provides a holistic approach to hunger relief, focused on rebuilding and strengthening family units by empowering our clients to become self-sufficient through our programs.
Target Hunger, a United Way agency, was founded in 1989 as a grassroots, community-based program to fight the increasing hunger problem within Houston’s inner-city neighborhoods. Community leaders including the late Congressman Mickey Leland and Houston businessman Pete Van Horn helped form the Select Committee on Hunger to examine the issue of hunger in Houston. They found an area of town where the needs of the hungry were not being met, and Target Hunger was formed.
Today, Target Hunger is one of Houston's largest organizations that provide food to food insecure individuals and families living in inner-city neighborhoods. The organization distributes more than five million pounds of food annually and serves more than 15,000 individuals each month. With 12 food pantries, 11 senior day sites, 11 home delivery routes and 17 community gardens, Target Hunger has created a community in which nobody goes hungry, and individuals are able to provide food for themselves and their families.
We provide a holistic approach to hunger relief. Our agency focuses on rebuilding and strengthening family units by empowering our clients to become self-sufficient through our programs. Target Hunger currently offers several programs to clients, including nutrition classes, education and literacy programs, GED and ESL classes, self-esteem classes, youth development and more.
Our volunteers provide an invaluable service to our clients and organization. With several opportunities available, from assisting in the food pantry to working in our community gardens, we consistently seek outstanding individuals to help us carry our mission to the community. We welcome anyone who wants to volunteer, including individuals, social groups, religious organizations, students and corporations.
