Volunteers lead a small team of students through a 4 ½ hour simulation wherein the students create a true to life household budget based on a randomly assigned life situation. Volunteers guide the students through research of 20 expense line items commonly found in family budgets (everything from mortgage and car payments to cable and health care). The students create a budget, shop for the best options for their families, and pay monthly bills. Volunteers must participate in a 90-minute training the morning of the simulation prior to students arriving. This training provides volunteers the opportunity to learn what has happened during the in-class portion of the program, as well as prepare for the simulation.

Mission Statement
Junior Achievement (JA) is a nonprofit youth organization whose core purpose is to inspire and prepare young people to succeed in the global economy. Junior Achievement moves this mission forward through hands-on programs that promote work readiness, entrepreneurship and financial literacy.
Description
Junior Achievement is the nation’s largest organization dedicated to giving young people the knowledge and skills they need to succeed in a global economy, plan for their future career, and make informed academic and economic choices. Founded locally in 1950, Junior Achievement of Oregon and SW Washington is an affiliate of Junior Achievement USA which has been a national leader for 100 years in preparing young people for their economic futures. Junior Achievement is the recognized leader in "empowering young people to own their economic success(r)" through volunteer-led, experiential learning.
Junior Achievement offers programs in three main categories: In-Class programs, JA BizTown and JA Finance Park. In-Class programs incorporate volunteers who visit school classrooms to present JA programs, using prepared kits which include all of the lessons and materials needed. JA BizTown and JA Finance Park blend approximately 12 hours of teacher-led classroom instruction with a culminating simulation day. JA BizTown volunteers serve as program facilitators, helping 5th-grade students participate in the economic simulation and manage their businesses. At JA Finance Park, our signature financial literacy program for middle and high school students, volunteers guide students as they make budget decisions about everything from groceries and housing to transportation and health care. Volunteers serve as invaluable mentors by helping students understand the essential role that education plays in their future success.
