Our greatest need at Shared Harvest Foodbank is sorting and packing food

The project you will be doing when you come in will depend on the needs of Shared Harvest and the community at the time you arrive. Unfortunately, we can not guarantee a specific project as it can be based on inventory availability.

EXAMPLES OF PROJECTS

  • Packing Senior Boxes:

This activity is an assembly line of packing boxes. Each person will take 1-2 items to pack in the box down the line for our Senior Program (CSFP). We will play music and make it fun, the 2 hours will fly by fast! This activity is best for larger groups so let us know if you have a large group and we will try to get you in for this activity.

More about our Senior Program:CSFP provides nutritious supplemental food for persons who are over 60 years old, residing in Butler, Darke, Miami, Preble and Warren Counties and whose income is at or below 130% of the poverty level. We distribute 1,200 boxes each month containing 21 to 25 food items. This project's average recipient is 73 years old and tries to live on $800 a month. They depend on this box of food to help them afford to live independently and with dignity. Volunteers will pack boxes of food in preparation for monthly orders.

  • Sorting Food Donations

Shared Harvest gets donations daily from retailers like Kroger, Amazon, Meijer and more as well as individuals through food drives or drop off donations. These foods once received need to be inspected, checked for best by dates, then sorted into various categories so that they can be packed for distribution.

  • Packing Pantry Boxes

Once we have enough donations sorted, we package them for distribution to our Member Agencies. Our Member Agencies (local food pantries, soup kitchens or shelters) will then receive these boxes to equip their shelves for distribution to food insecure neighbors.

  • Sort & Pack Bulk Donations

Sometimes we get large donations of bulk dry goods, fresh produce, or meat. Items like meat are highly requested by food pantries, but they can't be distributed until they are inspected and packed. One of our volunteer activities could look like sorting, packing & prepping those bulk donations into smaller bags or boxes for distributions or pantries.

Minimum Volunteer Age: 10

15-17 may come without an adult only if parental consent is submitted.
