Ghana is a country of dramatic change and optimism, which is reflected in the schools in which we work. Though they are often over-crowded, understaffed and under-funded, a real enthusiasm and a hope for the future seem to permeate through the students. It is going to be hard to maintain this as more and more skilled teachers continue to leave for EUPROPE and AMERICA in search of lucrative teaching contract, because of this we welcome any assistance from volunteers to teach basic causes like English, French, Computer, Mathematics or Science from pre-schools, primary, junior high or senior high schools. You don’t need qualification to be part of our teaching project just basic knowledge of the subjects, you can volunteer for a minimum of two weeks and a maximum of 12months.
Your contribution will go a long way to make a difference in a Childs life. You don’t even need to speak the local language where you are volunteering. The program is open to all volunteers whether you are on a gap year, at university or wanting a career break. All we require is a good standard of spoken English. You will find a warm welcome awaits you from our students,Usually you will teach about 18 hours of conversational English lessons per week. You will also need to take time to prepare your lessons, and correct your students’ work. Many volunteers choose to help out in other areas too, helping students with extra-curricular activities like sports, drama or music lessons for example.
You don’t need to be a qualified or experienced teacher to join the program, and you are sure to receive a warm welcome from the schools we work with who are eager to have our volunteers. The schools we work in are generally poorly resourced but full of students eager to meet you and work with you. you will find that students and staff will be excited to work with a new person from another part of the world. You will often find yourself as something of a local celebrity!
Teaching in community schools with limited resources provides an engaging environment for educating children and teenagers. The students are full of curiosity about the world around them and they welcome your perspective, you will also serve or be seen as a positive role models to students, You will be place in one of our community schools where you can choose to teach a class on your own or assist a local teacher till you are confident or ready to teach solo.
You can choose to teach pre-schools (age 1 to 6-years), primary(age 7 to 11), junior high or senior high school. You may also be involved in creative projects and non-classroom based activities which help create a stimulating learning environment. All our community schools are very understaffed this is a common phenomenon in both rural and urban areas of Ghana, hence the need to recruit and place volunteers in communities where there are simply insufficient teachers to cater for the number of children. You will be effectively placed in rural and urban communities where you will teach solo and assist the few teachers available to teach basic causes like English, Mathematics, Science, French, Spanish, creative art, drama, music, and Computer from per-schools(1-year to 6-year), primary(7-year to 12-years), junior high or senior high schools.
