ORGANIZATION: Area Agency on Aging of the Heart of Texas

A certified volunteer Ombudsman is a more challenging volunteer experience. We advocate for residents of nursing homes to improve their lives and care. Many times they don't have anyone to listen to them, to make sure they are heard or to care about them as a person. If you have a good heart, care about our older adults and are willing to stand up for them when something isn't right, consider being an Ombudsman.

Mission Statement

We are a health and human services organization committed to improving the quality of life for those in greatest need by providing advocacy, assistance and access to services to persons 60 and over and to those who are on Medicare.

Description

Our organization serves McLennan, Falls, Limestone, Freestone, Hill and Bosque Counties, as well as the greater Waco area. The agency serves the community through the Ombudsman program, Benefits Counseling, Care Coordination and Caregiver Services.

Certified Volunteer Ombudsmen visit nursing homes in the area, advocating for residents in those facilites, in order to improve their quality of care and quality of life. An Ombudsman listens to the resident, helps to resolve concerns that affect them, respects their choices and protects their rights. Benefits Counseling provides one on one individualized counseling services, to assist individuals in understanding the complexities of Medicare, Medicaid, Social Security, Veteran's Benefits and more. Benefits Counselors assist with completing applications for benefits, explaining options and assisting the individual with most of the financial issues that older adults may face. Care coordinators focus on helping persons to maintain their independence, freedom and dignity by identifying needs and arranging for the services they require to live independently. All the services offered by the agency are free.
