ORGANIZATION: Society of St. Vincent de Paul of Alameda County

Students help sort donations

St. Vincent de Paul of Alameda County's Clothing Closet provides access to clothing to our neighbors in need. Clients are able to choose gently used adult clothing and accessories in SVdP’s Free Clothing Closet, which is set up similar to a mini thrift store. Clients get to pick out their own clothing to meet their needs and preferences. Thanks to the clothing donations received by SVdP, the Clothing Closet is able to offer appropriate clothing for any need.

Volunteers will be asked to:

  • Organize and maintain Clothing Closet so clients can easily find items.
  • Hang clothing on racks.
  • Assist clients with checking-in, selecting items, and checking-out.
  • Operate the Clothing Closet.

Time: 2-3 hour shifts are available Tuesday - Saturday between 9am and 3pm

Commitment: We are looking for volunteers who can commit to one shift per week

Volunteers will attend an orientation and receive training on or before their first day of service.

Location:

Mission Statement

St. Vincent de Paul of Alameda County is dedicated to serving the men, women and children of Alameda County.

Description

A non-profit, community-based organization, St. Vincent de Paul of Alameda County (SVdP) offers emergency and social safety net services to its neighbors, relying on a vast network of volunteers to carry out our mission. We operate a free dining room, thrift stores, an e-waste recycling program, men and women's drop-in centers, workforce and culinary training programs and much more. St. Vincent de Paul serves everyone regardless of origin, creed, or affiliation. Our staff and volunteers are a diverse and talented group, representing a wide range of experiences and perspectives.

St. Vincent de Paul was founded in 1833 by Frederic Ozanam, a 20-year-old student of the Sorbonne University in Paris, France. Similar groups began to form in Paris, then spread throughout France, and eventually throughout the world.

Volunteers, known as Vincentians, are united in an international society of charity by their spirit of poverty, humility, and sharing. St. Vincent de Paul of Alameda County was founded in 1938, and has been serving the community of Oakland ever since.
