Mission Statement

The mission of the Penfield Public Library is to provide a broad and ever-evolving collection of print and non-print materials, as well as technology, programs, and gathering spaces for discussion, to meet informal learning, informational, cultural, and recreational needs of patrons of all ages. The library strives to provide library services in a fiscally responsible manner, on a free and equal basis, and in an atmosphere of friendly, responsive customer service. In providing these valuable services, the library is a viable force promoting individual and community growth.

Description

The Penfield Public Library is located in the Town of Penfield, serving the informational, cultural, and recreational needs of 36,000 residents which includes 4,500 students in grades K through 12 in six schools in the Penfield Central School District. The purpose of the Penfield Public Library is to connect people to resources. The library provides a broad and ever-evolving collection of more than 230,000 items, along with technology, programs, and gathering spaces to meet informal learning needs of patrons of all ages. Patrons borrowed over 200,000 items in 2021.
In September 1985, the library moved to a renovated school along with the Penfield Community Center. The library added an additional 10,000 square feet in fall 2000 to create a more user-friendly children's area.
For more than 40 years, the library has been supported by the Friends of the Penfield Public Library (FPPL). Founded in 1977, the FPPL members support quality library service through fundraising, volunteerism, and advocacy. The Friends have regularly provided extra funds to underwrite programs for all ages and extra amenities not included in the library’s annual budget.
The library also receives assistance from the Penfield Public Library Foundation (PPLF). Founded in 2019, the PPLF is dedicated to enhancing long-term financial support for the library. To build an endowment, the Foundation welcomes unrestricted donations including honor and memorial gifts, corporate matching gift contributions, estate bequests, and charitable planned giving.
