Travel as part of a group and volunteer in pairs in the rural villages surrounding Jinja, Uganda. It is a wonderful opportunity to experience rural Ugandan life and ideal for those ready for a challenge. There is a chance for cultural exchange whilst teaching English and/or coaching sports in a local primary or secondary school, and living amongst the Ugandans for 3 months in a rural setting. The teaching project is followed by an optional period of independent group travel in East Africa all with 24-hour support from our local representative.
A day in a life of a volunteer:
Set in a village not far from Jinja, you will start your day being awoken by the local children excited to play ball games and calling 'Muzungu’ ('white person’ in Lugandan). School starts at 8.00am although many students who attend boarding schools will have been up since 5.00am doing their chores.
Whilst volunteering in Uganda you will teach English and/or coach sports on your own or with your volunteer partner at a rural government primary or secondary school. You will live either on the school grounds or close by and walk to school each day, alongside your pupils. School is Monday to Friday and normally starts with assembly and the national anthem, followed by your English lessons, and possibly some Maths and Science classes too - whatever you are happy to help with. Lunch is provided in school and is normally Ugali - the typical East African dish of maize flour and water, which ends up resembling porridge.
There is also time for coaching sports too, as well as art, drama and music for those who are keen on extra-curricular activities. Classes are large - in some cases 50 children, so organising sports or controlling a class of this size can be challenging. Think on your feet and use your initiative!
The more you put into school life and getting to know the community, the more you will understand about this amazing country.
Spare time in the evenings or at weekends is spent preparing your lessons with your volunteer partner, marking books, or with the other volunteers and your new friends (neighbours and teachers). We encourage volunteers to get to know the locals - the teachers could even invite you to dinner.
Whilst volunteering at your school you will be accommodated in a basic staff house normally within the school grounds, with your partner or possibly in a 4. There will usually be a shared bedroom, a kitchen/communal area and a washroom. There are no showers - that is done with a bucket, and toilets are normally long drops (a hole in the ground). You will cook for yourselves and shop in the local market! There is normally no running water or electricity in the house. It is basic but all volunteers quickly grow to love their new home!
Our volunteer projects are a great way to improve your skills and enhance your CV - stand out from the crowd at job interviews! It is a competitive market out there - help others to help yourself!
Project dates - January to April/May, May to August/September, September to November/Decemeber
