Volunteers are the heart and soul of the services provided to residents who spend time healing at DOVES. Volunteers must be patient, conscientious, dependable, and willing to give of themselves fully to improve the lives of others. In addition, volunteers must adhere to the policies and procedures of DOVES’ Volunteer Program.

Duties ·

  • Prepare for and attend DOVES program functions and activities such as: Life Skill Workshops, Computer Classes, Individual Mentorships, Food Donation Deliveries, etc.
  • Assist DOVES in fulfilling its mission to our residents
  • Participate in the recruitment of new volunteers
  • Participate, with DOVES, Inc., in the evaluation of the performance of the DOVES Program

Qualifications

Valid driver’s license (if needed) and clean background check

Dedication and commitment to DOVES’ mission and core values

One or more of the following attributes:

  • Outgoing personality
  • Creative and innovative thinking
  • Willingness and compassion to work with any of the following: adults over 50, seniors or individuals with special needs (mental illness and/or behavioral health issues, HIV/AIDS)
  • Commitment to serve in one or more of the following programmatic areas:

ü Education (computer classes, life skill workshops)

ü Economic Empowerment (resume building, interview practice, budgeting support)

ü Health and Wellness (individual mentorships, food donation deliveries)

  • Philosophy of interdependence, teamwork, and ability to focus on strengths and assets
  • Ability and willingness to learn new things

Mission Statement

The Area Agency on Aging, Region One is a private non-profit organization that advocates, develops and delivers essential services to enhance the quality of life for older adults, persons with disabilities, people with HIV/AIDS, and caregivers.

Description

We are seeking volunteers: Teachers and Teacher assistants ASAP! Classes start September 24, 2018. The Area Agency on aging will teach older refugees to speak and read English. There is no experience needed and we will assist with the pre-literacy curriculum materials. The Area Agency on Aging is always in need for both types of tutors!

Classes ongoing at the Mosaic Center

Mondays and Fridays at Tanner Terrace apartments at 10 am to 12 noon.

Tuesdays and Thursdays at the Urban League from 1pm to 3pm.

Tuesdays and Thursdays at Beatitudes from 9am to 11 am and 12pm to 2pm.

Tuesdays and Thursday s at Helen of Drake Senior Center from 1 pm to 3 pm.

I appeal to you who have the compassion to volunteer with the Area Agency on Aging Resettlement for older refugees. Please come forward and help us in a big way, we need your help. As a reminder, classes are not held during national holidays. Thank you in advance.
