About

Volunteers in the Live Animal Center assist in the care of approximately 100 small, wild and exotic domestic animals used in education programs for the Academy of Natural Sciences museum. The animals include snakes, lizards, turtles, parrots, ducks, hawks and owls, rabbits, chinchillas, guinea pigs, and rats ... among many others. Most of the basic care-taking volunteers do is cage cleaning (80%), but you also help prepare and distribute food, and assist in overall care and enrichment of the animals' life at our facility.

Volunteers learn about each animal through one-on-one hands-on training with the animal as well as reading material. This is an exceptional opportunity for those interested in careers in veterinary science or wildlife management, or those who love animals of all kinds. A more intensively scheduled internship in the Live Animal Center is also available for college students or adults seeking career expereic
