Flood Bucket Frenzy - Oyster Restoration

Save to Favorites

ORGANIZATION: South River Federation

  • A group opportunity. Invite your friends.
  • 4 people are interested

The Federation Celebration starts on Sunday, October 9 th with the "Flood Bucket Bonanza." With 700 "Flood Buckets", we need your help distributing the oysters onto the sanctuary bed, as well as, filling the buckets with new baby oysters, called spat. Before the Federation became involved with the Marylanders Grow Oysters (MGO) program, John Flood, founder of the South River Federation, created his own oyster cages called Flood Buckets, where inside of oysters grow. Dumping these oysters might be a messy job, but you’ll get an up close and personal experience with what you can find in these cages--there’s more than just oysters growing in these Flood Buckets.

About South River Federation

Mission Statement

To protect, preserve, restore and celebrate the South River and its interdependent living community.

Protect means to value and respect the natural environment, including the river and the living resources that depend upon it. The Federation believes that the River is a privilege for all to enjoy and that as inhabitants of the land that ultimately determines the health of the River, we have an obligation to be good stewards of the River. In carrying out this duty to protect, the Federation reviews land use plans, advocates for strong laws and regulations and identifies and stops sources of pollution.

Preserve means to retain the natural features of the watershed that are currently vibrant and healthy, such as forests and wetlands that play important water quality and habitat functions.

Restore means to return the river to good health. This includes turning muddy water clear, reducing pollutants that have a negative impact on water quality, and improving conditions in the river that enable fish, river grass and other natural vegetation to thrive.

Celebrate means to enjoy the river as a place for sport and recreation, a calm place to get away to, and an opportunity to connect with nature.
