STEM Volunteers/Advisors Needed

Are you concerned about the shortage of Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) skilled professionals? Do you want to support Educators in creating curricula that stimulates interest and growth in the STEM fields? Do you like working with high school students - tutoring or mentoring? Do you like facilitating small groups who are researching and solving complex problems?

If you have answered YES to any of these questions, Sammamish High School (SHS) needs you. SHS, a Bellevue School District school, has been awarded an i3 (Investing in Innovation) federal grant. The grant money will be used to 1) design and apply problem-based curriculum, 2) implement specific support for struggling students with an emphasis on increasing mathematics literacy, and 3) build partnerships with STEM businesses/professionals who can support students and classrooms as well as mentor teachers who will be implementing the new problem-based curricula.

Join VIBES (Volunteers in Bellevue’s Education System) and support Sammamish High’s teachers and classrooms working to prepare students for post high school studies and careers in STEM professions. Tutor a student one-on-one, support a math or science classroom, facilitate small problem-solving groups, or partner with a teacher in developing and evaluating curriculum. Volunteers are asked to commit to one hour a week, during the school day, for the duration of the school year. VIBES tutors often say the best part about volunteering is witnessing the "aha moment," when a student figures out a difficult problem. Help a student achieve an "aha moment" by becoming a Sammamish High VIBES volunteer.
