Project Literacy

San Leandro Public Library's Project Literacy is now offering online tutoring sessions. We are looking for Online Volunteer Literacy Tutors to help adults in the San Leandro community improve their literacy skills. Our Online Volunteer Literacy Tutors will:

  • receive free training on how to tutor an adult online
  • commit to meeting weekly with a learner for at least 6 months
  • meet online with their learner 1-2 times per week for 2 hours
  • help reduce illiteracy in the community
  • contribute their ideas and creativity to improve Project Literacy programming
  • be a part of a program that provides a long-lasting, positive impact in the community

About Project Literacy

Mission Statement

Project Literacy is a library-based volunteer organization offering free, confidential, one-on-one tutoring to English-speaking people, age 18 and over, who are lacking in sufficient reading and writing skills to manage adequately in their home, work, and community lives. Project Literacy was created in response to national and local concern about adult illiteracy and assumes that adult learners want to improve their reading and writing skills so they may live and function more comfortably.


To be an online volunteer literacy tutor with Project Literacy you must:

  • - Be 18 years or older and have a high school degree
  • - Complete our free tutor orientation and both training session
  • - Commit to at least 6 months of tutoring
  • - Tutor an adult learner for minimum of 2 hours per week
  • - Complete fingerprinting/background check
