Spend time with another guy and have fun! Go bowling, shoot hoops, grab lunch. In as little as 4 hours a month, you can make a difference in the life of someone living with a mental health condition.
The Compeer program in Chester County, PA, connects a volunteer with an adult of the same gender (age 18 or over) for a one-to-one friendship. Supportive friendships have been proven to boost self-esteem and ease loneliness for those in mental health recovery.
Volunteers receive training to prepare them to meet their "compeer." Based on mutual interests and location, each volunteer is paired up with someone who has expressed interest in having a new friend and has been referred to Compeer by a mental health professional. Compeer staff facilitate an introductory meeting. Staff provide ongoing support.
Compeer also sponsors group events throughout the year where all volunteers and friends can get together. Learn more by visiting www.compeerchesco.org or calling 610-436-4445.

To connect adults who have mental health conditions with caring, trained volunteers, thereby maximizing community participation and helping people enjoy a friendship.
We match volunteers in friendships with men and women living with mental health conditions who can benefit from socializing and getting out in the community. Compeer Chester County is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, volunteer-based program that is part of Mental Health Partnerships (mentalhealthpartnerships.org). Each volunteer befriends one person of the same gender.
Sharing activities and conversation with a supportive friend has been shown to help a person with a mental health diagnosis feel more positive and hopeful -- and less isolated. Friendships build confidence and boost self-esteem, both vital for someone on their road toward recovery.
The word "compeer" means peer, equal, companion. Matched "compeers" decide together what activities to participate in during their time together each month.
Compeer is supported by the Chester County Department of Mental Health/Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (MH/IDD) and private donations.
Compeer's vision is that way people view persons with mental illness will be changed; persons in mental health recovery will feel more included in their communities, and their lives will be transformed by connecting them with a special friend.
