Reading is empowering. It opens doors. It provides hope.
But for some local children, learning to read well is a daily struggle. These kids are part of the YMCA READS! Program at Sulphur Springs Elementary. And they need your help.
The Y- READS! Program began in February 2011 at Sulphur Springs Elementary School, a school where the majority of the students are not reading on grade level. The goal of the program is to provide students with at least 2 hours weekly of reading time with a certified Y- READS! volunteer.
Each volunteer works with one to two kids for at least two days a week. During this reading time, kids are given the chance to ask questions, learn reading strategies through the use of an easy to implement curriculum and develop a love of reading.
The program operates Monday-Friday during and after school.
