Sub-Saharan African Youth and Family Services in MN (SAYFSM)

Three Bags
Sample project made by African immigrant women here in Saint Paul.

SAYFSM is looking for women interested in volunteering their time and quilting and sewing talents with the women of our Self-Sufficiency Program - Under One Roof. Volunteers will be helping African immigrant and refugee women sew clothing, quilts and quilted items. The women may have some sewing skills, but have never quilted before. We are looking for volunteers willing to help these wonderful, enthusiastic women pursue their dream of self-sufficiency.

The classes are held in the same building with the SAYFSM office. The sewing classroom is equipped with 10 sewing machines and all the equipment needed for quilting. Class size usually ranges from 3 to 8 women. The program has recently expanded and is also offering classes at the Brian Coyle Center in Minneapolis.

We are looking for volunteers who will assist the teacher during class time or be present in the classroom when students come in to work on projects they have already started in class.

Hours are flexible.
