SMP Volunteers Empower Consumers
Volunteers help consumers to prevent, detect, and report Medicare and health care fraud.

The goal of the Illinois SMP (Senior Medicare Patrol) program is to empower Medicare and Medicaid beneficiaries to protect themselves from health care fraud. To accomplish this goal, the SMP Program relies on the skills of its volunteers to educate consumers in Illinois about health care fraud.

Illinois SMP volunteers educate consumers on fraud protection through one or more of the following activities as approved by SMP staff:

  • Distributing SMP materials and information to sites or at events
  • Providing office assistance
  • Staffing a table or booth to provide general SMP information at events, such as health or senior fairs
  • Giving presentations on SMP and health care fraud topics
  • Meeting one-on-one with beneficiaries to assist them in reading and understanding their health care statements and bills

SMP Volunteers help spread the SMP message across the state of Illinois by volunteering in their own communities through their local SMP partner agency. Contact AgeOptions from anywhere in Illinois for more information or for the local SMP partner agency serving your community. Also visit www.illinoissmp.org.

Description

AgeOptions (www.ageoptions.org) is a not-for-profit organization located in Oak Park, Illinois, that has served the older adults of suburban Cook County and their families as an Area Agency on Aging since 1974. As part of the nationwide network, we are authorized by the federal Older Americans Act and the Illinois Department on Aging as the Planning and Service Area for the 30 townships surrounding Chicago.

AgeOptions is governed by a Board of Directors, whose responsibilities include setting our direction, establishing policies, and managing and allocating resources. Using proven methods of research and planning, AgeOptions is entrusted with distributing funds to a network of organizations that serve older adults and their families. Our Advisory Council consists of a group of older adults who represent and link us to the communities in our service area. Our executive and management team, whose combined experience in the field of aging exceeds 120 years, are responsible for the implementation of strategic plans and day-to-day operations.
