The Urban Rest Stop, a project of the Low Income Housing Institute, provides a safe, clean and dignified place where as many as 500 homeless individuals, families, elders and youth access restrooms, showers, and laundry facilities each day. This innovative hygiene center located in downtown Seattle is open seven days a week, with extended hours specifically designed to assist homeless persons who are working or seeking employment. In fact, 60% of our patrons have steady employment, but can't earn enough income to afford the rent. While staff is present during every shift, URS relies heavily on regular volunteers to sustain its operations. We are looking for volunteers to help keep our doors open during extended weekday, weeknight and weekend hours so we can continue serving as many members of the homeless community as possible.
Currently the Urban Rest Stop is recruiting data reconciliation and data entry volunteers! Orientation, training & ongoing support are provided.
Time commitment: Three-month commitment minimum of one 2-hour shift per week or more.
Schedule: Flexible 2 hour shifts are available on weekdays between 9am and 5pm
Skills and Requirements: Sincere desire to help people experiencing homelessness. Good data entry skills. Reliability. Cooperative and positive attitude. Enthusiasm and a sense of humor a plus! An interview and background check are required.
Be part of an innovative, locally and nationally-recognized program working on the frontlines of homelessness! Build your resume by expanding non-profit and social service experience - references will be provided upon request.

About Low Income Housing Institute
Location:

Mission Statement
The Low Income Housing Institute develops, owns and operates housing for the benefit of low-income, homeless and formerly homeless people in Washington state; advocates for just housing policies at the local and national levels; and administers a range of supportive service programs to assist those we serve in maintaining stable housing and increasing their self-sufficiency.
Description
LIHI develops and provides affordable housing to 4,000+ low income, homeless and formerly homeless people, including families. In 2019, an estimated 11,199 people experienced homelessness in King County alone. Many of LIHI housing projects focus on transitioning families and individuals out of homelessness, including chronically homeless populations. Most of the units developed by LIHI are occupied by formerly homeless households.
LIHI assists our residents with services that help them maintain stable housing and prevent them from becoming homeless again (e.g. through improving resident income and/or education status, dealing with long standing mental and physical health conditions) and increase self-sufficiency.
We also help homeless individuals and families remain healthy & employed: LIHI operates the Urban Rest Stop - an innovative hygiene center for the homeless located in downtown Seattle; a safe, clean and dignified place where as many as 500 homeless individuals, families, elders and youth access restrooms, showers, and laundry facilities each day. This center is open seven days a week, with extended hours specifically designed to assist homeless persons who are working or seeking employment. 60% of URS patrons have steady employment, but can't earn enough income to afford the rent.
