For non-English speaking parents in West Seattle there are significant barriers keeping them from engaging with their children. Youth enrolled in Seattle Public Schools tend to speak better English than their parents, yet need help with homework, as well as assistance in navigating the school system. Immigrant parents of youth enrolled in Seattle Public Schools may also lack reliable language skills in communicating with teachers. These barriers manifest in ways that ultimately keep parents from fully accessing their children's experience at school, with peers, decision making, and other crucial devleopmental stages in which parents need to be invested. This volunteer role would be working directly with parents in this community to improve their English skills.
Responsibilities:
- Facilitating class and helping to create activities and/or lesson plans for students
- Helping students with dictation, pronunciations, conversation and responding to questions.
Qualifications:
- Commitment to helping immigrant and refugee people succeed.
- Positive group dynamic and tangible successes
- Experience working with diverse communities
- Classes are fun and encourage people to become more engaged in their community.
Volunteers are needed for the following classes:
- Mondays, 12:00-2:30pm: lead instructor and two volunteer tutors needed
- Wednesdays, 10:00-11:30am: three volunteer tutors needed
- Wednesdays, 12:30-1:30pm: tutor needed to work with two clients

Mission Statement
The mission of Neighborhood House is to help diverse communities of people with limited resources attain their goals for self-sufficiency, financial independence, health, and community building.
Description
We provide free services that are culturally and linguistically relevant to immigrants, refugees, public housing residents, and low-income community members in King County. Neighborhood House was founded in Seattle by the National Council of Jewish Women in 1906, and for 114 years has fought to end the cycles of poverty, racism, and social inequities.
We want to lift children out of poverty. We want them to be healthy and ready to be successful in school and life. We want these children grow up in safe and supportive homes and neighborhoods.
We want to lift families out of poverty by creating opportunities for economic self-sufficiency and asset building.
We want seniors to live healthy, independent lives with respect and dignity, surrounded by friends and a supportive community.
We want to build strong and vibrant communities where everyone feels an attachment to their neighbors and neighborhood, where they work together to solve problems and celebrate their cultural diversity.
And finally, we want to create a greener, more sustainable community where low income families live in neighborhoods that are free of pollution and buffered from rising energy costs.
