VOLUNTEER ORIENTATION: One Saturday every month (3400 NE 53rd Ave, 32609)
We are in constant need of volunteers to interact with, socialize, and provide mental and physical stimulation for the adoptable dogs at our Shelter.
If volunteers do not take them out, the adoptable dogs at the Shelter are in their kennels 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. This lack of stimulation can result in increased stress, anxiety, boredom, pent up energy, nervous habits, and health problems, all of which can make these animals less adoptable.
We have multiple grassy play yards and 2 small concrete areas for volunteers to interact with adoptable dogs off-leash. Simply getting dogs out to stretch their legs, use the bathroom, and sniff around can relieve a great deal of stress and improve their mood. Additional activities such as throwing toys and teaching the dogs skills and tricks such as "sit" are optional, but can further provide a mental and physical outlet and can make dogs more adoptable.
Other duties include assisting with special events, cleaning kennels, assisting Shelter staff, answering questions from the public, assisting potential adopters, recording behavioral notes, and reporting signs of illness.
The Shelter is open Tuesday-Saturday, 10:30-5:30. Volunteers can interact with dogs any time the Shelter is open.
