Mission Statement

Common Hope promotes hope and opportunity in Guatemala, partnering with children, families, and communities who want to participate in a process of development to improve their lives through education, health care, and housing.

Description

For the last 35 years, Common Hope has been walking alongside families living in poverty in Guatemala. Over those three decades, the organization has learned that in order to break the cycle of poverty, it must do MORE THAN provide immediate, temporary assistance. Rather, Common Hope is committed to families for the duration of their children’s educational journey, providing holistic services and support at every step of the way. By eliminating barriers to education for children and creating safe, healthy living conditions for their entire family, the organization has helped thousands of families unwind the cycle of poverty.

Common Hope works with over 14,000 Guatemalan children and adults living in rural and urban poverty in 26 communities surrounding Antigua. Our programs are concentrated in four basic areas: education, health care, housing, and community and family development. Within these areas, Common Hope offers education support, adult education, tutoring, literacy classes, vocational training, women's groups, help with domestic abuse and alcoholism, personal counseling, preventative health care classes, clinic exams, access to a pharmacy, surgery, home health visits, dental care, latrines, stoves, houses, roofs, cement floors, access to electricity, and water purification systems. Through each of these efforts, Common Hope's aim is to address poverty from a multi-dimensional approach and provide the consistent support that is necessary for families to begin moving toward a more hopeful future.
