A Day on the Sales Desk
Volunteering at the Newspaper Sales Desk means you get to know many of our vendors and build relationships with them.

Interested in doing some direct service with Real Change newspaper vendors? Come volunteer on the paper sales desk! Right now we have a need for Sales Desk substitutes who can come in on an on-call basis for a 4 hour shift. On-call volunteers are typically the first to know about regular shift openings.

The Sales Desk volunteer assists homeless/low-income Real Change vendors when they come into the office, and acts as receptionist for our Pioneer Square office. Your specific duties would include: interacting with vendors, data entry into a FilemakerPro database, and light office tasks such as typing, filing, and filing mail items. We want vendors and other program members to feel welcome and safe when they come into the Real Change office, as often times this is the one place they are treated with dignity. Our sales desk volunteers are that first, friendly point of contact when they come to our office.

Skills required: Experience with computers is a must; familiarity with FileMaker Pro or other databases is helpful. Since you will have regular contact with people who are homeless/poor, strong communication skills are essential. You must be able to multitask and work well without supervision. Patience and the ability to work both under pressure and during down-time is required. Retail/cashier experience is helpful in this position.

Hours: This position requires you to be available to volunteer for one four-hour shift per week, 8am-12pm Monday - Saturday, for at least 12 weeks. You must be able to commit to showing up on time and stay for the whole shift. Sales Desk substitutes generally serve anywhere from 1-3 shifts per month. Preference given to applicants with availability during the workweek.

Restrictions: You must be 18 or older for this volunteer position. Sorry, we cannot accommodate court-ordered volunteers or service-learning students in this particular role (though if you would like to volunteer in other ways, we are happy to discuss options to fulfill your hours requirement!).

To apply: Contact Jenn Romo at (206) 441-3247 ext. 212 or email volunteer(at)realchangenews(dot)org to schedule an orientation.
