ORGANIZATION: Real Change Homeless Empowerment Project

Real Change

About: Real Change is an award-winning weekly newspaper that provides immediate employment opportunities to homeless and low-income people. If you're interested in working directly with Real Change newspaper vendors, we would love to have you volunteer at our Sales Desk!

Sales Desk volunteers help to create a warm and welcoming environment for houseless and low-income Real Change vendors who visit our office in Pioneer Square. For many vendors, the Real Change office is one of the few places throughout Seattle that feels safe, friendly, and welcoming. Sales Desk volunteers play a critical role in creating such an accessible environment, as they are often some of the first people vendors interact with as they come into the office. Specific duties include: Welcoming vendors into the office, operating our FilemakerPro database to assist vendors in purchasing their newspapers (we will teach you how to operate this user-friendly system), assisting vendors with their Venmo accounts, light office tasks such as filing mail and creating Vendor badges, updating vendors about upcoming events, and providing resources such as lunches, coffee, hygiene products, and more!

Time Commitment: We are currently looking for volunteers to fill:

  • Every other Friday from 8:30am-12pm
  • Coverage Shifts - 3 to 4-hour shifts on an as-needed, coverage basis. When our current sales desk volunteers go on vacation, get sick, and/or have other commitments or emergencies come up, we need volunteers to help us cover these Monday-Saturday shifts! Generally, coverage volunteers serve anywhere from 1-3 shifts per month.

Skills Required: Experience with computers is a must; familiarity with FileMaker Pro or other databases is helpful. Since you will have regular contact with people who are homeless/poor, strong communication skills are essential. You must be able to multitask and work well without supervision. Patience and the ability to work both under pressure and during down-time is required. Retail/cashier experience is helpful in this position.

Restrictions : You must be 18 or older for this volunteer position.

To Apply: Please email volunteer@realchangenews.org to get started!

Highly regarded as the leading street newspaper in North America, Real Change provides a low-barrier employment opportunity to an average of 250 homeless and low-income individuals each month while challenging the structures that create poverty.
