LSI Volunteers in the Senior Immigrant and Refugee Program helps former refugees aged 60 and over with the goal of becoming US citizens learn English and prepare for their naturalization interview. Volunteers serve as lead teachers, classroom assistants, or one-on-one tutors depending on their interests and the needs of the students.
Key responsibilities
- Lead teacher develops lesson plans and assistant teacher supports in administering their lessons in a variety of ways including but not limited to participating in demonstrations, leading activities in small groups, and working one-on-one with individual students
- Communicate respectfully with students when engaging in repeat activities and topics to give students an opportunity to master the content
- Adjust plans, techniques, and/or approaches to meet the learning styles of the students and follow the instruction of the ESL Activities Specialist with the ultimate goal of helping students become independent learners
- Classes meet Mondays and Wednesdays from 9:30 to 12:00.
- We ask that volunteers commit to at least one class per week for at least one session (4-8 weeks) for assistant teachers and nine months for lead teachers
