Come help celebrate the Cherry Trees on the National Mall by staffing the Cherry Blossom Festival Welcome Tent, provide general information to the visitors, distribute handouts, and answer questions.

Logistics:

Classroom training about the history cherry trees will be available but not mandatory. Training and festival information will be provided to volunteers at the beginning of each shift. There will be literature about the cherry trees for your information.

Shifts are from 11am -2pm and 2pm-5pm. Sign up as often as you like.

The festival is from March 23 - April 14. We will be staffing the welcome tent on the weekends and during the week of the peak bloom only. Those dates are to be determined.

We need volunteers (VIPs) to staff three tents. Two small, 10x10, tents at both ends of the tidal basin parking lot. Each tent will have three enclosed side with an opening facing the tidal basin with room just enough for two people per shift. Towards the middle of the parking lot, there will be a bigger Stewardship Tent where we will combine the JR area and the old welcome tent together to make one big area for all to gather and enjoy. There, we are going to staff it with up to four VIPs in addition to rangers and guides.

Wear layers as the temperatures fluctuates this time of year. A volunteer shirt will be provided but bring additional jackets and other articles of clothing like gloves and earmuffs to keep warm. You will be inside a covered area but no heat. Bring snacks and water. There will be other food services for you to purchase.

There's no parking. Likely you will need to take the Metro or be dropped off to the Paddle Boat parking area which is located at 1500 Maine Ave SW, Washington, DC 20024 just south of the Bureau of Engraving and Printing at the intersection of Maine Ave and Raul Wallenburg. Enter the parking lot area and go to the first tent.

We look forward to seeing you there.

Description

The Washington that you see today had its birth two centuries ago in a rational yet visionary design unprecedented in its scale. Pierre Charles L'Enfant's plan for the city and its core mall area was influenced by urban planning then current in Euproe and neoclassical landscape design exemplified by Versalles. Brilliantly adapting those ideas to Washington's terrain, L'Enfant placed the Capitol on Jenkins Hill and the "Presidents House" on a lower terrace then overlooking the Potomac River. Between them ran Pennsylvania Avenue, to symbolize the spearate but connected branches of government. The spirit of that plan lives in the city still.
