ORGANIZATION: Cultural Canvas Thailand

Cultural Canvas Thailand's 'Care for Street Dogs' volunteer program is placing volunteers at the Care for Dogs Foundation just outside the city of Chiang Mai. Care for Dogs is a charity that runs several programs in the greater Chiang Mai area that all aim to provide human assistance to the many homeless and abandoned dogs and cats in the community, giving them the appropriate treatment and care that will improve their health and overall way of life. One of the Foundation's main goals is to curb the ever-growing homeless dog and cat population.

Care for Dogs runs an emergency rescue service, whereby the Foundation responds to calls about roadway accidents and injured or endangered animals. Care for Dogs will ensure the animal is treated and will provide necessary after-care at the animal shelter. Care for Dogs also runs a frequent sterilization and spading program, where female dogs are picked-up and brought to the shelter to monitor their health signs and arrange for their sterilization.

Care for Dogs offers street and temple dog outreach by visiting various locations in and around Chiang Mai, including several temples and the local markets. Staff and volunteers will travel to these locations to visit these animals, monitor their health, give them vaccinations on occasion, and ensure that the females are sterilized.

Care for Dogs volunteers will have the opportunity to participate in several aspects of animal rescue, recovery and care. The Foundation employs a small, dedicated staff that is not only responsible for the rescue service, the spading program and the temple dog outreach project, but are also in charge of the daily running of the animal shelter and administrative office. The shelter looks after over 100 doggie residents, a number of which are seriously ill and need to undergo daily treatment and care. The shelter's amenities are also in need of restoration and repair. The once decorated walls have since lost it's luster and color, falling victim to harsh weather conditions and age. The shelter staff has been working intermittently on building more doggie furniture and playground pieces, and are always in need of fresh ideas and crafty individuals to lend a helping hand.

Care for Dogs makes it a priority to be as visible as possible within the community. Staff and volunteers attend the popular city walking streets regularly to offer the public information about the organization and all the available programs they have set up to aid animals. The organization hosts frequent adoption fairs and training sessions for animal owners.

The Care for Dogs volunteer program is a hands-on placement that requires dedication and an overall love for animals. Volunteers must be proactive and ready to jump into the daily grind of work both in the field and at the shelter.

All of Cultural Canvas Thailand's volunteer placements deal with social issues such as discrimination and the abuse of basic human rights. You will be learning about the lives of people from another culture and the problems they face such as poverty, hunger, disease, prejudice and many others. You will build relationships and gain an understanding of the issues confronting Thailand and many other parts of the world.
