ORGANIZATION: Virginia Senior Medicare Fraud Patrol Program

Community Advocates with the Virginia Senior Medicare Patrol (SMP) inform seniors, their caregivers, and the general public on how to prevent, detect and report Medicare fraud, errors, and abuse. SMP volunteers distribute written information about identifying and preventing health care fraud and SMP program services. Training covers topics such as protecting your medical identity, reading Medicare benefit notices, recognizing scams, and how to report concerns.

Virginia SMP is a part of the Virginia Association of Area Agencies on Aging and is funded by a Federal grant.

SMP volunteer opportunities offer flexible scheduling as volunteers can select the dates and locations of outreach events which best suit their availability. After training, volunteers are asked to commit to four outreach events per year. The SMP program receives requests daily from civic and community groups for our prevention information and resource materials. Most events, such as wellness fairs, are scheduled during weekdays with some weekend community event opportunities available.

Join us and be a part of a grassroots effort to reduce the billions of dollars lost each year to Medicare fraud, errors, and abuse. Help to put this important information in your neighbors' hands!
