Adult literacy

Think about it...and then...consider becoming an adult tutor.

Learning to read and understand medical prescriptions, legal documents, financial/ credit information, and written instructions are vital parts of everyday life. Did you know that many adults in Livingston County are unable to perform in this capacity? And that 11.4% of Livingston County residents over the age of 25 do not have a high school diploma or GED?

RSVP is actively recruiting volunteer tutors over the age of 55 to participate in making a difference in the lives of adults 18 years and older who want to improve their ability to read and language skills. These volunteer tutors will help highly motivated adults to succed in reading, writing and using language skills, or in obtaining their G.E.D.

A volunteer commits to tutoring one student for two hours per week for at least one year. Staff provides ongoing support to all tutors.

Training is required.

Tutoring takes place one-to-one privately in a public place (i.e. library) that is mutually agreeable to the tutor and learner.

RSVP provides no cost supplemental accident and liability coverage to all volunteers registered with RSVP. Other benefits may be available to RSVP volunteers as well.
