CARES Northwest (Child Abuse Response and Evaluation Services) is a pediatric outpatient clinic based on the campus of Legacy Emanual Hospital in Portland, Oregon. CARES Northwest is a collaborative community-based medical program for the prevention, assessment and treatment of child abuse. In-house volunteers serve in Child/Family Support, Administrative Support, or Research Support. Project volunteers serve during special events. Resource Board volunteers contribute to resource development and fundraising. Our Child/Family Support volunteers work with professionals in pediatric and adolescent medicine, child abuse intervention and treatment, medical social work, crisis counseling, psychology, forensic interviewing and multi-disciplinary team process. Opportunities for advanced learning in state of the art child abuse evaluation and treatment include regular video-teleconferencing with experts throughout the U.S. www.caresnw.org

Mission Statement

CARES stands for Child Abuse Response and Evaluation Services. CARES Northwest provides a centralized assessment center for children who may have been abused or neglected. Physical examinations and interviews are done in a comfortable environment to help the child feel relaxed and unafraid.

Description

Our goals are to minimize further trauma to child abuse victims and their families by coordinating expert evaluation services in one location; to provide a high level of expertise in the medical diagnosis and treatment of abused children; to provide access to mental health interventions as quickly as possible; and finally, to recommend medical and psychological treatment and follow-up in cases of child abuse.
