Our Volunteer hours (once you have attended an orientation) are seven days a week from 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Following are some potential volunteer needs:

1.Feeding the parrots (we start feeding at 8:00 a.m.
2. Cage maintenance and toy hanging
3. Temporary cage assembly
4. Landscaping including flower and tree planting and grounds maintenance
5. Equipment maintenance
6. Fund raising events and event planning
7. Clean and organize sheds (inventory).
We also have some special group volunteer projects for scout troops and school organizations etc. Volunteers are invited to apply to work in various areas. Skilled electricians, plumbers and carpenters are also needed. There is also a need for volunteers willing to do manual labor in a variety of construction and maintenance projects.

People interested in applying for our volunteer opportunities should fill out the form located on our website and then e-mail it to birdmother@flabirdsanctuary.com. A Sanctuary representative will call you to make an appointment for orientation.

Children under 16 must be accompanied by an adult who must stay with you the entire day! We also welcome your school or organization projects.

Volunteer Orientation

Orientations are required and are by appointment only. You must first complete the attached form and a regular orientation before becoming a volunteer. Orientation lasts approximately 45 minutes and is required. It provides the policies and procedures of the sanctuary along with the Safety Rules for the protection of both you and our parrots. It also includes hands on training on how to enter cages and what to look for while feeding the parrots (toys needing replaced, parrot health, cage inspection etc.)

About Florida Exotic Bird Sanctuary

Location:

Mission Statement

The Florida Exotic Bird Sanctuary is dedicated to the care and well being of parrots and other exotic birds. We do not breed, sell, trade, or offer for adoption the birds in our care. Instead, we endeavor to provide them with a permanent home that allows them to mingle with other compatible birds in outdoor open-flight aviaries. We also strive to provide permanent, caring homes for birds with special needs, including those with physical challenges or behavioral issues. Finally, we are committed to raising public awareness regarding the moral responsibilities and physical demands of keeping parrots or other wild animals as pets.

Description

With millions of baby parrots and Exotic birds being produced by the pet trade each year, the population of captive birds continues to grow. As peoples' interests fade and the birds AND the people get older, the overpopulation of parrots is destined to become a heartbreaking tragedy. This is now the case with cats and dogs where four to five MILLION are euthanized every year. With their long life spans, parrots have a built-in homeless factor because every long-lived parrot will outlive his or her original guardian. There are many reasons that a parrot will lose his or her home during their lifetime including health problems of the parrot's guardians, downsizing, caring for someone in the family, a new baby, a move and many others. With all of these factors we are more determined than ever to continue our efforts and mission of growing and being able to help many more Parrots find their way to us and to have the freedom to just be a bird!
