Non-Medical Direct Patient Care Volunteers are invited into the life of the patient and their family to provide companionship and enhance the quality of life. Listening to their stories and validating the life of a person is one of the privileges and rewards of this work. A volunteer noticed during a visit that the patient was very restless about something and through gentle discussion it was discovered that a bridge needed to be mended with a brother and with permission the volunteer found the brother by exploring the internet. The patient wanted to write a letter to see if the broken relationship could be mended. The volunteer prepared and mailed the letter for the patient. When the brother received his letter he responded by immediately getting on a plane and was at the bedside of his beloved sister the next day. There was wonderful healing that took place and the patient's restlessness became an overwhelming peace. By the volunteer recognizing the need and taking action the reward received was unmeasurable (one of many true stories provided by volunteers). Hospice Compassus Volunteers Make a Difference in the Lives of Others Every Day!

Description
Hospice offers peace and comfort to patients and their families by reducing the stress, pain and other symptoms of a serious illness. Hospice care includes medical, emotional, social and spiritual support.
Many believe hospice is only for the final days or hours of life. This is not true. Hospice is not about dying; it's about helping patients and their families live as well as they can when life expectancy is limited.
